Lizards of Arizona

Arizona is home to over 50 species of lizards, ranging from small, quick-moving whiptails to larger species like the iconic Gila monster. Of these, only the Gila monster is venomous, making it one of just a few venomous lizards in the world. Despite its fearsome reputation, encounters with Gila monsters are rare, as they are slow-moving, spend much of their time underground, and are not aggressive toward humans unless provoked. Most lizard species in Arizona play a beneficial role in the ecosystem by controlling insect and are an important food source for other predators. While hikers or outdoor enthusiasts may frequently spot them basking in the sun or darting across trails, they pose no threat to people.

Whether you're a seasoned herpetologist or a curious nature enthusiast, this guide is designed and intended to aid you in identification and helpful knowledge of our state's lizards.
